Program note

We at Various Things & Stuff will be taking some much-needed time off for the rest of the week, so the blog will be silent until we return. We’re marking the occasion of our one-year wedding anniversary with a trip to the beautiful Napa Valley of California, where some of the world’s finest wines are grown.

Oh, and guess who else appears to be headed to wine country for some R&R? Why, it’s U.S. Sen. John Ensign, who just got finished losing big-time to the Democrats as head of the National Republican Senatorial Committee!

“I’ve already made my plans post-election,” Ensign told Politico.com back on Oct. 21. “I’m taking my wife to Napa Valley. And so we’ll either be able to celebrate or drown our sorrows. We’ll see how that goes.”

Indeed, we did see, didn’t we? Barack Obama by 8 million votes. Democrats gaining six — and possibly as many as nine — seats in the Senate. Greater control of the House of Representatives, including Nevada’s 3rd Congressional District with the election of Dina Titus. Control of both houses of the Nevada Legislature. An all-blue Clark County Commission. Ouch, baby. Very ouch.

And while we hate to make Ensign’s post-election vacation any more awkward, we feel compelled to point out this little tidbit: Napa County, Calif., went for Obama by a margin of 65.2 percent to 32.9 percent! The wines may be red, but the people are deep blue!

Ah, Ensign can always tell them he’s still a veterinarian.

UPDATE: Oh, darn. Looks like Ensign didn’t make it to Napa after all. Too bad, too: The weather was perfect, the crowds were slim, the food was good and we talked to some very nice people from California and Ohio who worked hard to elect Obama. In other words, we had a great time, even without seeing Ensign trying to work out his depression on the golf course. Ah, maybe next year.

You make the point precisely, “Topper”: Reagan was a bit of a pussy. When you win an election, you toast with Scotch. Chardonnay is for clambakes!

As for your continuing obsession with human slavery, our perspective is a bit different: When the nice women responsible for taking classified ads for our paper were still located at our office, we saw some of the exotic entertainers come in to place their ads. They were nobody’s slaves.

Of course CityLife doesn’t support slavery: In fact, we’ve done work to expose it. But let’s not confuse Topper with the facts. He still cannot explain — if our writings are in fact “dull” — why he’s still reading and commenting on this blog!

Geeeeze, “Topper Harley” (if that’s your real name) you’re showing your political bias by delusionally claiming that Reagan “evicted” Carter - and I’ve got to say your comments are absurd!

Do you really think anyone at CityLife supports human slavery - seriously?

When Ronald Reagan evicted Jimmy Carter from the White House in 1981, he held a cocktail party with his new cabinet to make fun of Carter’s ban of alcohol in the White House.

What did Reagan drink at the party? A California chardonnay.

I doubt very much a human slave from Thailand, China, Vietnam or elsewhere whose services are advertised in Citylife, agrees with your statements about self-determination or human freedom.

And your writings about wine and cigars are dull.

Cakebread Chardonnay? That’s an awfully effete choice for somebody calling him/her/itself “Topper Harley”! Here’s the thing: Whether people actually care about CityLife or not, we know YOU do, Topper. You not only read it enough to know about the ads that embrace the concepts of self-determination and human freedom in the back, you read the website and this little blog, too. We cannot help but be touched, and thank you for your support.

P.S. Sav Blanc is the closest we got to Chardonnay. Sorry.

Well, on behalf of the thousands of readers THAT DO CARE AND READ CITYLIFE and LOVE THAT CITYLIFE IS FREE - enjoy your time off Steve and congratulations on making it to your first anniversary!

It is said if you make it past your 5th - the odds turn in favor of your marriage surviving? I wouldn’t know because I was never able to get past that magic 5th year - HA!

While your there, why not play like paparazzi and harass the hell out of Ensign - you know, just for kick, grins and giggles - between the wine tasting?

Some pictures of Ensign drunk could be of real value in the future TOO!

And the best part, nobody reads or cares about your free paper with human slavery ads in the back !!! Try the Cakebread chardonnay.
