Good news for … Jim Gibbons?

Finally, some much-needed good news for Gov. Jim Gibbons, whose lie-plagued, scandal-tainted, gaffe-stained, incompetence-marred tenure has left him with the reputation of worst governor in America, including Alaska.

The tax amensty idea that he championed? It’s brought in $27.3 million in unpaid taxes, far more than the two most recent tax amnesties combined. And that’s nearly $30 million that won’t be cut from schools, or so we hope. Gibbons has asked — and the state Tax Commission has agreed — to extend the program for another month. Good for them.

Now, here’s another idea: After the program is over, the state should vigorously pursue every single person and business who has still failed to payoverdue taxes, insisting in court that assets be seized to satisfy judgments, even if so doing would put those businesses out of business. This will accomplish two things: One, it will bring money into state coffers. Two, it will tell people that, if you don’t pay your taxes — even after we’ve allowed you to do so without a single fine or penalty — you simply can’t do business in Nevada.
