…who are putting out statements about the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now. The Democrats are distancing themselves from the group like it was Yucca Mountain or something.
A statement from the Nevada Democratic Party that, unlike certain mailers in certain state Senate races, is remarkably free from error:
Nevada State Democratic Party officials today addressed raids by Nevada Secretary of State and Attorney General’s offices today on the Las Vegas headquarters of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN).
“We commend the Secretary of State and Attorney General’s offices in this investigation,” said Travis Brock, Executive Director of the NSDP. “Elections must be fair and open to people who are eligible to vote, but we condemn any efforts to improperly register voters.”
Nevada State Democratic Party voter registration efforts are completely independent of any third-party agency or organization
Nevada has strict laws designed to ensure only eligible voters can participate in elections. Any new voter in the State of Nevada must provide a driver’s license number verified by the DMV, or the last four digits of a social security number, verified by the Social Security Administration. Registrants who do not meet these criteria are required to present identification when voting for the first time.
Because of these safeguards and the outstanding work done by the Secretary of State’s office, it would be very unlikely that fraudulent registrants could cast a ballot.
And here’s another brief statement released by the Barack Obama presidential campaign in Nevada:
“The Obama campaign is committed to protecting the integrity of the voting process. We support the Secretary of State’s investigation and full prosecution of any illegal activities,” said Kirsten Searer, Nevada Communications Director for the Obama campaign.
That’s it? No “innocent until proven guilty,” no “small group of scammers,” no “let’s not rush to judgment”? ACORN, entirely apart from its voter-registration work, has done some real good in community organizing. The group advocated for a grocery store in West Las Vegas, one of the few communities in town that didn’t have one. It advocated for speed bumps to make streets safer. It held a rally on a particularly rough street corner, demanding safety for local residents from criminals who took over when the sun went down. It called out Wells Fargo Bank for alleged predatory lending practices.
Not a word about the good things ACORN has done? From the Democrats? Oh, right. They’re Democrats. Well, consider the above the only shout-out to ACORN you’re likely to read in these parts.
