We’ve been neglecting the blog this week since we got behind on stuff and are just now starting to catch up. But we couldn’t resist this story: “Entertainer” Jerry Lewis will not face charges for trying to smuggle an unloaded gun through McCarran International Airport, reports the AP.
We realize Lewis is old, and let’s just say it, pathetic. We realize that his excuse — he put the gun in a carry-on bag a year ago and forgot it was in there until he passed through airport security — is plausible. (After all, even an idiot wouldn’t try to actually smuggle a gun on an airplane, right?) And we realize that Lewis has engendered a lot of goodwill because of his muscular dystrophy telethons. He’s also entertained millions with his movies, most of them in France.
But consider this: If anybody else got caught trying to do this, would they have gotten off so easily? Would Justice of the Peace Karen Bennett-Haron have been so lenient? Would attorney Ross Goodman have taken the case? Maybe. Maybe not.
Maybe we were just hoping for a harsher penalty because we think that Lewis is a bit of a dick. And by “bit of” we mean “total.”
Enjoy your potentially celebrity-justified freedom, Lewis.
