CNN, the Associated Press and CBS News are confirming at this hour (2220, Pacific time) that U.S. Sen. Barack Obama has chosen Delaware U.S. Sen. Joe Biden as his running mate.
Regular readers remember we wrote glowingly of Biden during the Democratic primary. That came from meeting the senator a couple of times face to face and talking to him about issues. Despite our best hopes, Biden got creamed in the Iowa primary and dropped out shortly thereafter, which we recall as a very depressing night.
But we hoped that Biden’s intelligence, wit and penchant for plain speaking would endear him to whomever won the Democratic primary. In our view, he should have been anybody’s first choice for secretary of state.
Obama went us one better, asking Biden to be a heartbeat away from the presidency. And he couldn’t have done any better, no matter where he looked in America. In addition to unparalleled foreign policy experience, Biden has a mind every bit as sharp as his wit. The contrast with the incumbent vice president couldn’t be more stark, as we’re sure it will be with whomever U.S. Sen. John McCain chooses to be his running mate.
Obama was, of course, our choice before this announcement. (The alternative — “more wars, my friends, more wars” — remains unthinkable.) But our choice is cemented tonight. It’s time to really restore honor, dignity and truth-telling to the White House. And this is just the team to do it.
There are 151 days before the next president and vice president put their hand on a Bible and take an oath to support, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. We think there’s a damn good chance that, for the first time in eight years, we’ll get a team that actually means it.
On to November!
