Why I’m boycotting The Killers

Reader Rick Kirkendall writes:

I just read your article in this weeks CityLife on THE KILLERS. Let me tell you why I won’t be buying the new album or any future album by this band. Sure, I wasn’t there in the very beginning when they played at Cafe Nola on Maryland Parkway; but then again, who was?? But when the buzz about them started with the release of HOT FUSS ( I read about it in the British NME, something I read weekly) I immediately bought the new album when it was released in America, and I bought all five Import CD singles at Ten Dollars each just for the B Sides. I also bought SAM’S TOWN, and saw their shows at the Hard Rock (where I thought they got the worse sound mixes ever).

Well, I understand why they spend most of their time overseas where they are worshipped and have money thrown at them hand over fist. But when the announcement came they would be playing at the House of Blues just weeks ago, with ads in the Las Vegas Weekly and the CityLife; my 35 years of concert going experience and skill on Ticketmaster-was logged online at exactly 10 a.m., and ten seconds later I couldn’t even get ONE Ticket. This has NEVER happened to me, ever. I was Shut Out of their concert.

When I found out that their “fan club” got first grabs at tickets, well, fine…But if they wanted to make this a Private show for the “Fans” so be it. But don’t advertise the show in the local papers as if it would be open to everyone. I am not 16, or a “friend” on their MY SPACE page. But I’ve been going to concerts for years, and up to this point bought all their CD’s. When they could have played inside the Mandalay Bay Events Center where Everyone who wanted a ticket could have gotten one, instead they went the Elitist route and it was a case of ‘who you know’ to get inside the House of Blues.

So I’m done with them. I won’t buy the new album and you’ll soon see my CD collection of The Killers in a used bin at ZIA Record Exchange. In a “day and age” (sic) when CD sales are at an all time low, there are far more deserving bands who are worthy of my 12.00 dollar purchase. Apparently the collective egos of Brandon Flowers and Company are believing their own hype and really don’t care much for the locals of Las Vegas other than their ‘fan club’ members.

Rick I think I see where you are, you know, coming from. Totally understandable, however, I agree with Gomez below that the scalpers are to blame. I read an article recently about how a certain cite based in England had bought the excess of the tickets for the Royal Albert Hall show and sold them for $200 profit/ticket. The Killers were selling them at $35 and the scalpers knew that this is a huge band with a huge following. Perhaps people pirate CD’s instead of making the band look bigger in sales, no worries though — the Killers can’t be stopped and will surely bring more soul to the right Vegas venues in days to come. I was also at the Hardrock show and you KNOW it! It was great!

If Rick wants to get mad at somebody, he shouldn’t be mad at the band. He should be mad at the scalpers ERRRRRR ticket brokers who snap these tickets up in an instant. His beef is with Ticketmaster for creating a flawed ticket sales process that they won’t improve because they get their money either way. It’s a shame he’s tossing out his fandom for something that isn’t even the band’s fault.

If Ticketmaster cared (and they don’t), they would implement a system similar to what they use to sell tickets for Glastonbury: a way of hard coding tickets to the person purchasing them so that they’re worthless if re-sold.

Oh boo-hoo…wah I couldn’t go so I am not a fan anymore. Of course a concert like The Killers at HOB is going to sell-out. I got tickets on general sale, you were just unlucky. This show was arranged at short notice and was a warm-up and a treat for local fans.
When Radiohead played Hollywood Bowl in LA for 30,000 people the tickets sold-out in an instant. Gigs sell-out instantly for many shows, you either just accept it like an adult and not spit-out your paicifer.
The Killers have played many shows in Vegas from HOB, Hard Rock, Empire and Vegoose. You can’t say you haven’t had opportunities-you got to go to the Hard Rock when many other fans didn’t. Just grow up man, bands who become popular sell out their shows.
