Merry Christmas, casino workers!

Just five weeks have passed since CityBlog warned that 2009 was gonna look ugly for the gambling syndicate, and just in time for Christmas we can unfortunately share the first bit of substantial bad news for working-class folks who make up the backbone of the industry.

Today, NV Money Matters, which is apparently a news organization, reports that Black Gaming LLC will temporarily - that’s, ahem, temporarily - close the Oasis Casino in Mesquite, effective this Friday.

According to the report, “The decision leaves 500 people, nearly a quarter of the company’s work force, unemployed during the holiday season and possibly beyond.”

Today’s report comes in light of recent statements from Frank Fahrenkopf, president of the American Gaming Association, who warned in mid-November that smaller casino companies might not survive the recession.

In a state in which generations of myopic leaders have failed to establish a sane tax base — unlike in other parts of the country — a sputtering gambling business will hurt nearly everyone.

As we reported back in October, unless researchers find that neon mixed with cigarette smoke and well-brand booze can cure cancer, AIDS, spina bifida and restless leg syndrome, 2009 could make many Silver Staters pray for a return to this year’s abysmal economic conditions.

Unless you think we report this bad holiday news with any sense of relish, consider what our own industry is likely facing in 2009.
