The rock of shame?

Our old friend Sue Brna — a community activist, artist and all around good person — e-mailed us a photo this week that we find amusing, outrageous and sad, all at once. Check it out and you’ll see what we mean:

It’s a dedication plaque at Desert Breeze Park. If you look closely at the names, some should pop out at you.

For example, then-Vice Chairwoman of the Clark County Commission, Erin Kenny. Yeah, she just reported to prison this week for accepting bribes from strip club owner Mike Galardi, and maybe a whole bunch of others, too.

Then there’s Dario Herrera and Mary J. Kincaid. They’re actually in prison right now for taking Galardi bribes.

Lance Malone? Yeah, he was Galardi’s bagman here in Las Vegas and down in San Diego, where he helped corrupt lawmakers in a bi-state skein of corruption. He’s behind bars, too.

Myrna Williams was never convicted of any crime, but the taint of the so-called G-sting scandal cost her the 2006 election. Her district now belongs to Chris Giunchigliani.

Oh, and Yvonne Atkinson Gates? She’s under investigation by Metro Police, who think she allegedly got campaign kickbacks from her son, whom she hired to do advertising for her last sure-thing campaign. (Her son and his wife, meanwhile, were recently arrested on charges including child endangerment and drug possession.)

So the only politician on this rock who is unscathed is Bruce Woodbury?

Brna wonders whether its a good idea to spend money on plaques like this when the people listed thereon only end up in prison. And although back in 1999 we had no idea that most commissioners would be corrupted, it’s not a bad point. How about just a nice sign that says "Desert Breeze Park." That way, we don’t have to worry about dedication rocks being turned into rocks of shame.
