For those who didn’t see the dispatch on Saturday in Norm Clarke’s column, it’s true: We at Various Things & Stuff will no longer be hosting Political Insiders on KTNV Channel 13. For many readers, this begs an obvious question: There was a show called Political Insiders on KTNV Channel 13?
But for those 14 faithful fans who followed our venture into TV punditry, we say, thanks for your support. And, even if you just left the TV on while you went to the kitchen to make a sandwich, thanks anyway. We appreciated it.
We also appreciate the chance given to us by Jim Prather, general manager of KTNV, who rolled the dice on a show about a year ago. We’d always been told we had a face for radio, but Prather thought otherwise and put us on the air, originally with radio talk show host Heidi Harris, and then solo. We’ll always be grateful for that.
The most thanks go to Mark Whitehead, our faithful producer and a one-man idea machine who crafted some of the most hilarious fake movie trailers ever. (U.S. Sens. John Ensign and Harry Reid, cowboy lovers? Gov. Jim Gibbons, played by Regis Philbin? Oh, yeah, baby!) His editing and visual effects were the heart and soul of Political Insiders.
In fact, it was Mark’s departure for KVBC Channel 3 that convinced both Channel 13 and us that continuing the show was too dubious a prospect. That, and time spent away from our real job at CityLife, where readers mercifully never have to see our smiling face.
Over the year that the show was on TV, we tried a lot of different things. Some worked, some didn’t. But it was always interesting, and a lot of work. In fact, we hereby send major props and much love to our television news brethren, whose job is a lot harder than most print journalists will ever know. You’ll never catch us making fun of their workload again, that’s for sure.
The cancellation of Political Insiders comes at a tough time in TV land. For example, those bastards over at the CW have canceled one of the best shows on TV, Veronica Mars. (The season, and series, finale aired May 22.) And we have learned that the next season of the SciFi original series Battlestar Galactica will be the last. Oh, it’s a dog eat dog world out there, people. (Thank God for Denis Leary’s Rescue Me, returning to the FX Network at 10 p.m. June 13.)
We don’t know if we’ll ever return to TV, outside of our mainstay appearances on KLVX Channel 10’s Nevada Week in Review. But if we do, we’ll be sure to keep you informed. Until then, we’ll have plenty of time for blogging, and you can catch our screeds in CityLife. And, for those few, those happy few who did, thanks for watching.
