A perspective on Sept. 11 and its aftermath that few could not have said better.

Thank you, Keith Olbermann.

Tuesday Quick Hits

We are knee-deep in paper here in our office in the nondescript building in an industrial area near McCarran International Airport. But we always have time for Quick Hits.

• Now that’s what we call style. KLVX Channel 10, which airs the program Nevada Week in Review with Mitch Fox on which we regularly appear, is moving to new digs by 2009! There will be seven — count ‘em, seven — studios in the new 112,000-square-foot building, according to the Review-Journal. The entire project is going to cost $64.7 million, offset by grants and donations.

We sure hope one of those studies studios is a cool Nevada Week in Review world headquarters type thing, with big-ass plasma screens, computerized graphics and a house band to come up with some good music for the show, at long last! (A fully stocked wet bar wouldn’t hurt, either!)

KLVX General Manager Tom Axtell says the public TV station is underwritten by a whole lot of private donors. “We have privatized public television to the point where we are overwhelmingly a private sector company,” he told the private-sector-loving R-J.

Gee, Tom, you say that like it’s a good thing…

• That was quick. Thom Reilly’s post-county manager, lightening-fast job switch reminds us of the time that ex-Las Vegas City Manager Virginia Valentine quit her municipal gig, spent about 10 minutes at the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce, and then jumped ship to the county.

Don’t get us wrong. We wish Reilly well in his new, reportedly half-million-a-year gig as vice president of community reinvestment and social responsibility at Harrah’s Entertainment. Hell, who knew the gambling industry even had such a job as vice president for community reinvestment and social responsibility?

Reilly will be hard for university Chancellor Jim Rogers to replace, although he’s got a rock-solid candidate there now in the person of Marcia Turner, who has relevant experience working at both UMC and UNLV.

Oh, and Valentine? Yeah, she’s now in Reilly’s old job as Clark County manager. It really is a small world after all.

• We don’t want to alarm you, but THE ENTIRE WORLD WILL END IF THE PISTOL INITIATIVE IS APPROVED!!!

That’s the message of Jeff German’s story in the Las Vegas Sun today, wherein he dutifully quotes Greenspun Corp. executive Phil Peckman, who boldly predicts “If this thing gets passed, I don’t think we’ll be able to build any roads at all.”

Now, this isn’t entirely a case of “if the rich establishment people are against it, it must be good.” The initiative probably will increase the cost of public projects that must rely on the government’s power of eminent domain. But an end to road construction? Somebody’s been sniffing the Liquid Paper around the office.

Ditto for Clark County Commissioner Bruce Woodbury, who we know doesn’t sniff Liquid Paper. “We’ll be facing gridlock in this community because we won’t be able to keep up with growth,” he said.

Good thing that’s not already happening! Oh, wait….

The thing is, Woodbury’s right when it comes to the fact that the PISTOL initiative gives an incentive for reluctant landowners to fight eminent domain proceedings, and there’s even a chance federal funds could be jeopardized. But roads will still be built.

Everybody needs to chill. Because, like it or not, when big government and big development team up, it makes some people very nervous. And nervous people just might vote yes.
